Resting In the Rain

I am one sore puppy today. Intensive gardening may have been a mild term for what I did yesterday and I'm paying for it today. I went to bed at nine last night and it hurt to walk upstairs. It's a rainy day today so I didn't get out but tomorrow I'm going to get back at the gardens and hopefully some of this stiffness will have been worked out.

The photo is of some kind of a creeping thyme that I have a huge patch of. My friend took a big hunk of it yesterday and told me that it will grow up stone walls so I moved some to the wall edges of the garden and will do more tomorrow.

Blogger had a problem uploading images yesterday and seems to be having a problem again today. I find it strange that I normally don't specifically refer to the photo but did yesterday ( the Nodding Nellie) and today (the thyme) and the days that I have are those that there's a problem. It resolved yesterday and hopefully by the time the music is uploaded and linked everything will be working again.

I found another version Big Long Slidin' Thing and have been wanting to get it up. It is by Michelle Willson and the evil gal festival orchestra. They're still working on their own website at the moment so here's a link to a Sound Click feature on them with more music to sample . I am amazed that Dinah Washington's version was not removed from the pages so you have a chance to compare. I love music from this era where there is an understory and hidden meanings to the lyrics . It's still April - still jazz month. I'm glad to hear new female jazz vocalists like Michelle and here's another new one I've discovered - Lisa Ekdahl with My Heart Belongs To Daddy.

Tropical Storm Watch

We are on tropical storm watch as we have been downgrades from a hurricane. Parts of the Maritimes will be getting winds of 150 km per hour. Those are some pretty fierce winds. My deck is naked and looks so strange. My sis-in-law helped me move the trays of rocks off to the barn and my son is here now to help me with the rest. The barbecue is next. I usually only clear the deck at the first sign of snow so it's a bit early to be staring at a bare deck.

I have a staff meeting in a while and don't know how long it will last so am posting early. When I come back, I'll be cooking supper for the boy and I. He likes his mama's cooking.

I don't know how many versions of Stormy Weather I have. It's an old American standard that I really like. I can not believe there are none up thus far but I'll remedy that. Here's a girl version and a boy version. Dinah Washington or Willie Nelson. I believe Leon Russell is playing piano in Willie's version.Which one do you like? If neither appeal to you I have many more.
I just discovered I have uploaded both of these versions to Page One. I must investigate if they are still reachable through the page.

It Goes On

The photo is of a pre-emerged sunflower. This link is to the mature flower. Pretty cool. Mature was the topic in Moody Monday - linked on the side. The asparagas was also considered in choosing the 'mature' designation for the entry.

Just finished supper and watched the many photos of waterspouts and rainbows yesterday on the evening news. It was pretty wild around here. After my post yesterday following my hike, we had rain, torrential rain, thunder and lightning, hail which was pretty widespread, and actual snow ( in Harrington). I had company in the afternoon and they left in the midst of heavy rain. My son was in hail twice, at his dad's and driving. Wild!

My neighbour is mowing a second crop of hay, clover really, at this moment and the smell is coming into the window in front of me. Hmmmm.

Music: I feel quite free now in choosing music because it doesn't matter if I put it up before. It's probably gone so I'm just uploading it again. Weather like yesterday's should be celebrated or at least acknowleged. My library has a million versions of Stormy Weather. Here's one by Dinah Washington. I posted a different song from her on the Shutterchance blog this weekend and was well received. I like this version a lot. Strange Weather by Tom Waits fits for yesterday as well. Maybe I'll celebrate weather all week.

Wintery Woes

We had, and are still in the midst of, the very worst snowstorm of the entire winter. Everything on the Island is at a standstill. All the special Easter church services were cancelled as well as most of the family and friend get-togethers. I was invited to two dinners but I, like many people, are not leaving their homes in this.

We got about 38 cm. of snow when 15 to 20 had been forecast. We will get another 15 cm. (or so they estimate) today. The wind is really strong and has thrown a huge drift across my back door. It will be hard to push my way out to shovel when it's all over.

The picture above is of my downstairs bathroom window. Even the upstairs windows are covered in snow. Really amazing!

Music today is a fact, then a wish. Stormy Weather is the fact and this version is from the great Dinah Washington. Sasha Dobson does a fine job with Spring Is Just Around The Corner. That's the wish. Not long ago I was giving spring music and we were having spring weather. Now it's winter again.

Woke Up This Morning

My dinner party got cancelled and lo and behold I got invited to a potluck. I changed my dinner menu to Indian so at least have something put together to take along. This is another going away party for my friend who is moving to Newfoundland. I can't even guess at how many dinners she may have attended in her honour this week. She cancelled her attendance at our meeting last night to go to a dinner too. She won't have to eat for a week afer she moves.

Just talked to two of my kids in their various areas, am about to call my friend who turned 50 this week, then will call the third kid and grandkids. After that, no more telephone!!!

Music today: I have no theme today so, some women with the blues today. Ruthie Foster doing a gospel-tinged, bluesy, Woke up this Mornin' and some old blues with Dinah Washington looking for some lovin' from a Big Long Slidin' Thing.

For a link, another local artist, John Burden. I have one of his paintings and am reading a book right now that he illustrated. I'm on his mailing list, I guess, so got an invitation to attend an opening tonight. The show is up for only a week so I'll pop in on Tuesday. I find his work very interesting. It's very "busy" thus good for someone like me, who likes to be visually stimulated.
